욥기(Job) 영어성경(제1장 ~ 제2장)

 

가을사랑

 

 

In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil.

 

 

온전하고 정직한 성품, 그것은 우리가 본받아야 할 성품이다. 그러한 성품은 결코 저절로 생겨나지 않는다. 항상 하나님을 경외하며 하나님을 바라보면서 살아갈 때 형성되는 것이다. 그리고 그러한 성품을 유지하기 위해서는 끊임없이 기도하면서 살아야 한다. 그렇지 않으면 사탄이 침입하여 어렵게 쌓아놓은 성품을 하루 아침에 물거품으로 만들어 버린다.

 

 

He had seven sons and three daughters, and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.

 

 

사람의 성공 여부는 재물로 판단할 수 없다. 행복한 가정을 꾸미고 살아가는지 여부만으로도 판단할 수 없다. 그러나 하나님께 죄를 지으면 아무 것도 가질 수 없다. 욥의 경우에는 하나님을 경외하면서 죄악에서 떠나 있었기 때문에 많은 복을 누릴 수 있었다. 그는 성공했다기 보다는 훌륭한 사람이었다고 성경은 기록하고 있다. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East. 우리는 많은 것을 소유하는 사람보다는 훌륭한 사람이 되어야 한다.

 

 

His sons used to take turns holding feasts in their homes, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would send and have them purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, "Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." This was Job's regular custom.

 

 

아무리 물질적인 축복을 많이 받아서 누린다고 해도 사람은 항상 경건한 자세를 가지고 살아야 한다. 인간이 죄를 지으면 하나님을 욕되게 하는 것이다. 그러므로 항상 정결하게 하고 하나님께 죄를 짓고 있는 것이 아닌가 돌아보아야 한다.

 

 

One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them. The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it." Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil."

 

 

"Does Job fear God for nothing?" Satan replied. "Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face."? The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger." Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

 

 

하나님을 경외하고 죄를 짓지 않는 이유가 하나님께서 주신 복 때문에 그런 것은 아니어야 한다. 이기적인 마음에서 하나님으로부터 많은 복을 받기 위해 기도하고 하나님을 두려워해서는 안 된다. 진심으로 하나님을 섬겨야 한다. 사탄은 이런 관점에서 욥을 시험해 볼 것을 하나님께 요구하고 있다.

 

 

One day when Job's sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house, a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, and the Sabeans attacked and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who ha s escaped to tell you!" While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, "The fire of God fell from the sky and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!" While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has es caped to tell you!" While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, "Your sons and daughters were feasting a nd drinking wine at the oldest brother's house, when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!" At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised." In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.

 

 

인간은 무척 연약한 존재다. 스스로 할 수 있는 일이란 별로 없다. 모든 것이 하나님의 손안에 달려 있다. 인간에게 닥치는 불행은 어느 순간에 찾아온다. 아무런 예고도 없다. 전혀 예측하지 못하는 불행이 닥쳐오면 감당할 수 없다. 불행은 겹쳐서 온다. 하나의 불행 다음에 또 다른 불행이 겹친다. 공황상태를 만드는 것이다. 이럴 때 어떻게 해야 하는가? 하나님을 원망해서는 안 된다. 불행은 하나님께서 주시는 것이 아니기 때문이다. 모든 불행은 사탄의 역사에 의해 야기된다.

 

 

On another day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them to present h imself before him. And the LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming th rough the earth and going back and forth in it."Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason." "Skin for skin!" Satan replied. "A man will give all he has for his own life.? 욥 2:5 But stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face."?The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life." So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes. His wife said to him, "Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!"He replied, "You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?" I n all this, Job did not sin in what he said.

 

 

재물을 잃는 것은 견딜 수 있다. 그러나 건강을 잃는 것은 정말로 감당하기 어렵다. 욥은 건강을 잃고 병이 들었다. 견딜 수 없는 육체적인 고통을 겪게 된 것이다. 우리가 건강을 잃었을 때 어떻게 해야 하는가를 생각하게 해 주는 대목이다.

 

 

When Job's three friends, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite, heard about all t he troubles that had come upon him, they set out from their homes and met together by agreement to go and sympathize wit h him and comfort him.When they saw him from a distance, they could hardly recognize him; they began to weep aloud, and they tore their robes and sprinkled dust on their heads. Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him, because they s aw how great his suffering was.

 

 

불행을 당했을 때 친구들이 찾아오는 경우가 있다. 진정 자신의 불행을 함께 울어줄 친구가 몇 명이나 있을까? 세상은 무척 외로운 곳이다. 남의 불행을 자신의 불행으로 똑 같이 울어줄 사람이 몇 사람이나 있는지 생각해 볼 일이다.
